Tallboy from Maud's Variety; dated Apr 25 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy, translucent golden-amber colour, kicking up half a finger of loose, soapy white head that sizzles off entirely within ninety seconds or so. The surface is utterly barren, with no sign of lacing, either - visually mediocre, but that's just the way kettle sours go sometimes. Plenty of guava on the nose, underlain by hints of lemon yogurt, wheaty malts and mild lactic character.
It's straightforward, but pleasant enough - the guava comes through nicely, providing a juicy dimension to this kettle sour. Other than that, I'm getting hints of grainy, wheaty malts, yogurt and lemon juice, with guava and lactic acidity rounding out the back end, which is tangy, then tart, then dries out a little, encouraging me to take another sip. Light-medium in body, with middling carbonation that feels crisp, lending some 'bite' to this sour's otherwise soft, juicy texture. Moderately refreshing, and easy enough to toss back, but I'd hesitate to say 'sessionable', i.e. one can per night is enough for me.
Final Grade: 3.74, a B grade. Guava the Hutt delivered pretty much what I was expecting - a basic kettle sour loaded with guava fruitiness. As a beer geek with limited interest in fruity sours, I don't see myself buying this again any time soon, but I wouldn't discourage others from giving it a go. In fact, if you enjoy this sort of thing and have a particular fondness for guava, it's definitely worth taking a flyer on. A passable introduction to Chronicle Brewing.
