16 ounce can poured into a dimpled mug.
Canned 8/24/21

L: Light amber with orange hue, fairly clear with some suspended sediment, sparse rising bubbles, almost two finger cream-white head, foam persists and leaves a small amount of lace
S: Moderate strength nose, bread like malt mostly, some spicy noble hop, getting a fleeting whiff of corn after it warms
T: Malt forward but well attenuated and lowly sweet, bread and bread crust, moderate bitterness at finish, citrus peel and spicy hop aftertaste
F: Medium weight, smooth all the way through but not quite creamy, medium carbonation
O: The aftertaste is more bitter than I would like and that slowed my drinking down a bit, an otherwise enjoyable and solid representation in my opinion

Looks nice with a clear amber and a big pillowy head. Aroma is unremarkable. Not sure why it is so subdued but I don't detect anything wrong either. This has to be the most German, American Marzen I have tasted in awhile. Must of used all German ingredients because it tastes exactly like something poured from a Paulaner bottle. I think that is the biggest compliment I can give to this beer. But again something from a German macro is not necessary something to strive for. Flavor is clean and the beer is not too big. Leaves a bit of an astringent aftertaste that hurts the score. Easy drinking and nicely carbonated to drink in mass quanities.

Clear amber body with two fingers of white foam, visible carbonation. Smell is toasty with sweeter accents of caramel malt and slight brown sugar. Taste is much the same, sneaky bready in the middle before re-submerging into the malt bath with great crisp malt finish. Feel is malty, toasty, and medium bodied. One of the better fests this year. The wife liked it

A nice O-fest (my second of the season), so it is welcome... and improves as it warms. Bought from Tavour.

Looks slightly below average (the average has a bit more foam and amber clarity.) Also slightly below average Smells as the sweet malts do not jump at me. Tastes are balanced by hops, but just an average experience as the malts simply are not sweet and full enough. There are a bit more bubbles to cleanse and quench the palate.

I'm thinking that O-fest is treated by young brewers as an easy way to break out of their initial portfolio. In True Respite's case and those of countless other young breweries, they use O-fest to explore what else they can be other than an AIPA/APA micro-factory. And that is good. But they don't, in the first few experiments, equal what the Bavarian masters have learned over generations.

I like True Respite's thoughtful approach to brewing. That this is an exercise in introspection for brewer and consumer alike. I like how they use their taproom space as a community spot and how they clearly describe their brewing process and purpose. And for all this, I give them good OA Hugs. As for their seasonal O-fest, work on it for 6 months... maybe do a collaboration next year. Cheers !
