Gear Head is brewed with a generous amount of oats for full flavor and body with a quenching backbone. We then hopped it with some of your favorite American varietals including Simcoe and Amarillo. Gear Head has the full aromatics of tropical and citrus notes that New Trail is known for, backed with the right amount of orange blossom to round out this absolute crusher. We all need our gear in order to make our adventures happen and we hope that a Gear Head helps you get there.

Poured out into my clear pint glass. The color was a light golden with a small white head.
The smell was of oranges and some other mix of citrus. Overall not that bad.

New Trail Brewing Co. "Gear Head"
12 fl. oz. can without production codes or freshness dating

Notes via stream of consciousness: The "Gear Head" has poured a very hazy golden body beneath a finger's width of white foam. The aroma is citrusy with delicate notes of orange and grapefruit, somewhat piney, and lightly resinous. It's not the brightest aroma but this is a pale ale and not an IPA so there's that. The taste is a bit different with what seems like berry and apricot, as well as a good dose of pine, and there's a little less orange to it. It's somewhat acidic which is a bit odd. The malt is basic, very lightly sweet, and oat-like. I have to say that it seems a little hollow. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and crisp. A stiff to firm bitterness runs through it and it finishes dry with some pine, resin, and a mild earthiness lingering. The head initially dropped about halfway from where it started but then held, slowly dwindling down to what is now - a thin but creamy surface covering. If the head completely covers the surface of the beer, however, I consider that quite good, and it's also left some very nice lacing. It's a decent enough American pale ale but at the same time I feel it could be better balanced and rounded in both terms of malt and hop flavors.

Not enough here for me. This one is very mellow with just a wash of flavor.
