Bourbon Barrel Feral Dawn - imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels

Feral Dawn was one of the first beers brewed here at Branch & Bone. It was also our first beer to go into and come out of bourbon barrels. This hefty, roasty imperial stout melds with oak and bourbon character bringing forth a rich, dark chocolate, fudgy character. We are extremely happy with how this came out and hope you enjoy it as well.

2024 version has a very nice buffalo trace barrel. High quality with an addicting characteristic. Excellent.

2022
Look - Black thick syrup with slight tan rimming
Smell and taste - sweet bourbon chocolate carame and boozy
Feel - a little syrupy and thick no real carb
Overall - very tasty

2023 - rating above
Look - black thick syrup and rimming
Smell - dark chocolate and barrel cold. As it warms up slight raisin wine
Taste - taste follows the smell from cold to warm. No real reason, more wine grape when it's warm
Feel - full body light carb
Overall - outstanding

From the 500 ml waxed capped bottle via Bluekacket74! Cheers dude!
This more than solid imperial pours a deep opaque with dark brown highlights
and a moderate head of tan foam that settles to a thin ring with subtle lacing.
Nose of dark chocolate, char, vanilla, coffee, and dark rich fruits doused
in bourbon and oak. Flavors nail it out of the park with charm brulee, oak,
bourbon, black and blueberries. coffee touches, earthy malts, and dark breaded
malts. Nice mouth feel; full slick body, smooth, low carbonation, rich, warming,
and finishing with a nice bitter malt note.

Overall-----exceptional!

IF you can let it breathe it improves with warmth!

Cheers

500 ml wax capped bottle, 2020 vintage. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that didn't stay around for too long. Not much lacing at all. I like the aroma, the brew smells like bourbon, fudge, vanilla and oak. Taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some dark bread, burnt/charred malt, earthiness and dark fruit flavors. Good amount of barrel character. Mouthfeel/body is full, it's smooth, creamy and slick with a moderate amount of carbonation. I thought this was a good barrel aged imperial stout, definitely worth trying if you come across some! $14.99 a bottle.
