they call this an icelandic porter, and i believe its a blatic porter at its core, a fine recipe, a little lighter to drink than anticipated, and its pretty near black to look at, maybe some reddish at the edges, frothy tan head on this looks right on, sort of a matte luster, charcoal, pretty. the roast on the grain is robust, its bitter in aroma and flavor, has dark chocolate character to it, espresso too, without a lot of middle malt richness, a hint of yeastiness to it, not quite sure it hits as lager yeast, almost more english to me, some minerals pushing toward astringency, light raisin, light smoke, burnt toast, somewhat simple but in a good way. i am used to these being in the 8% abv range, so i kind of ease into this even though its appreciably lighter than the norm all the way around. as it warms it seems to thin a little bit, but the deep grain character remains. slightly funny on the palate, the aftertaste is less good, but this has a neat vibe to it, not quite sure what makes it icelandic, but i guess thats cool too. this is a cool space in a touristy little strip of coastline, brewpub energy, good views, nice people, a relaxing place to pass the afternoon ripping pints. this is good enough and drinkable enough to have a few of, lots of bubbles too. a little different take, but i liked it.

Draft at Depoe Bay. Poured an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It sticky lacing on the glass. It smelled of roasted malt, coffee and caramel. Good roasted malt taste with chocolate and toffee.
