Mingle is our series of beers where we blend whatever hops we feel like to see if they have chemistry with each other.
For this version of Mingle we decided to blend New Zealand grown Cascade from our friends at Freestyle hops with our selected Citra.
The same variety of hops grown in different regions can taste completely unlike it’s parental name. That’s how we feel about this Cascade, it’s totally different than it’s Washington grown counterpart. We taste ripe papaya, white grapefruit, orange flesh.

473 mL can included in the 2022 Toronto Brewing beer advent calendar. Dated Nov 3 2022 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a turbid straw yellow, capped with two fingers of foamy, sudsy white head that dissipates within three or four minutes' time. A half-inch band of even lace sticks to the glass afterwards, with a tight, creamy collar and filmy cap upon the surface. It smells of grapefruit, flowers, hop resin and orange.
The first sip was a 180 experience: nothing out of the ordinary initially, but the NZ Cascade and Citra hop flavours gain momentum and finish very strong. Flavours of orange juice, papaya and melon at the forefront, with suggestions of gooseberry and a clean, bready pale malt backdrop. Lots of grapefruit juice on the back end, with a dank, floral, weakly earthy conclusion. Mildly acidic aftertaste with some hop burn; briefly lingering citrus pithiness & tropical fruitiness. Full in body, with light carbonation and a soft, juicy mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.95, a B+. The November 2022 edition of Mingle isn't perfect, but on the whole I think it's better than much of what you can find at the LCBO. The aroma is nothing to write home about, and I could do without the burn, but other than that it's a solid hazy pale ale that I'd encourage other BAs to try... assuming there's any left at this point. Hope to try more Badlands beers in the year to come.
