From a 16oz can with an illegible date stamp. Served in a spiegelau IPA glass.
Pours a chill-hazed ugly (IMO) burnt caramel-colour with two-plus fingers of thick cream-coloured head. Retention is good, leaving sticky gobs of bubbly lacing.
A relatively faint, malty nose. Aroma of lightly burnt toast.
Taste is very much like the nose, predominantly like burnt toast. There’s a big round fruity character but I can’t quite pin down what kind of fruit - the can label promises ‘delicate berry flavors,’ but it definitely isn’t that. Maybe peach and tea, with a harshly bitter, resinous turn at the finish.
Feel is satisfyingly round and fairly full bodied relative to the style with fine and (to my tastes) overly gentle carbonation.
Overall, a mixed bag for me. I don’t think I’ve ever had a beer that tasted more like toasted white bread dunked in fruit juice - make of that what you will. Also, the term ‘burnt’ arose repeatedly. Another word for burnt is ‘oxidized,’ and I think there may have been some of that going on here, too.
