a solid esb here, hoppier and fuller bodied than many, maybe not quite with as much drinkability as i like in a more classically fashioned example of the style, but i also like the liberties taken here, subtle as they are, and i think this is a well made beer for sure, my first from these guys, who i believe are relatively new to the scene. its light brassy copper color from the tap, with a short white head that settles back pretty quick. the aroma is a traditional maris otter type malt base, a little of that english crystal sweetness, and then a bittering hop note, fresh and green. the english yeast here is really mild, both the grains and the hops are in front of it, so its sort of a different kind of balanced than i am used to in the style, but i like the elevated malt character a lot, toffee and honey and bread notes to it without it being sweet or heavy. the hops are a little vegetal but the balance the grain well. smooth and round in feel, a little less carbonated than it could be, but a robust example of the style and an enjoyable glass of beer. nice to see some newcomers to the craft scene trying to save some of these english styles, sadly nobody is making this type of beer anymore. i will miss it when its gone...
