Last year we released Prison of Elders, a blend of old ales that had been aged in small format rye whiskey barrels for a year. Before packaging that beer we made a select blend of our favorite components and transferred it to a freshly-dumped Heaven Hill rye whiskey barrel where it rested for an additional six months.
Huge notes of toffee and caramel intermingle with chocolate, vanilla and very subtle dark fruit, while the palate is coated with the comforting warmth and presence of the barrel spirit and rye spice. A sipper to savor during the waning days of winter.

Pours a viscous, motor-oil density, struggling to form any semblance of head as an inconsistent, off-beige foam pokes at the surface; virtually no retention is yielded, with a choppy frothing of collar all that remains along with a futile, limited display of spotty lacing dissipating off of the walls of the glass.
Aroma is laden molasses, burnt sugar, and Werthers Originals upfront, with lingering caramel pronounced across toasted oak and bourbon waves, leaving figgy esters fading through malted cocoa and a toffeed richness over time.
Taste opens to bright fig and decadent milk chocolate enshrined in bourbon-soaked richness, in turn espousing vanilla residuals over the mid-palate into a fervent dark cocoa back end as barrel tannins linger through the finish.
Mouthfeel offers a full body and minimal carbonation, with silken, creamy textures meeting a delicately tannic barrel presence over the mid-palate as a subtle warmth cuts pseudo-stickiness on the back end into a semi-drying finish.
Rich and unrepentantly bold, a complete absorption of dark sweets is distributed across a level warming as an attenuated bourbon effectively supplements this potent display of barrel-aged old ale.
