This is a full-on, step-to-the-plate porter. And the man standing next to me at the bar, with a mug of porter in his hand, says it’s the best beer in the house. Why is that, I ask him. Because you can’t see through it, he says. And that’s what I like about Parkdale. It’s a town of infallible logic.

The Baseline Porter (again, named for a landmark of Mt. Hood, not a John Entwistle riff) is solid, inarguably opaque, with toast everywhere. A porter lover’s porter. Very satisfying, though it lacks head and lace and does tend to fade towards the end of the pint.

On tap at the Elliott Glacier Public House. The colour was as dark as molasses. The aroma was sweetly malty with a faint hint of hops. On the palate there was plenty of roasted malt as well as coffee and some dark chocolate to help the medium length finish.
