Tallboy from the LCBO; dated Dec 9 2021 and served slightly chilled.
More than hazy, this DIPA pours downright murky and muddy, loaded with flecks of sediment that coagulate at the bottom. Seated atop is one finger of smooth, foamy white head that fades down to a creamy collar and filmy cap within several minutes; lots of lace deposition as the level drops with a few sips - looks fine to me. The aromatics are pleasant enough, but rather subdued - tangerine, piney hops, muddled stone & tropical fruit, with faint suggestions of coconut.
Flavours of apricot, orange and grapefruit come through initially, alongside hints of mango, passion fruit and banana; these are backed by a bready, doughy pale malt sweetness throughout the sip. Stays fruity, but becomes moderately bitter towards the finish, adding some spicy, piney, almost minty qualities to the mix; slightly earthy aftertaste, but the fruitiness lingers just as long. A little boozy once it warms, which is barely noteworthy for a DIPA. Medium in body, with low carbonation that gently prickles the palate, resulting in a soft, smooth mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.86, a B+. I will say this about Odd Stacks, it goes down really smooth for a DIPA - perhaps not entirely surprising given its relatively svelte 7.5%, but that smooth mouthfeel also helps a lot. Its fruity hop-dominated profile is not exactly novel in the Ontario market, but this is still a pretty solid hazy, semi-imperial IPA that I'd love to try again with a fresher sample. It's only the second Powerhouse brew I've tried, but it has convinced me to drop by Kellogg Lane the next time I'm visiting the Forest City.
