473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jan 5 2024 and served barely chilled.
Pours a hazy, translucent pale golden colour, generating two fingers of foamy, bright white head that gradually dissipates. About five minutes later, it has been worn down to a creamy collar and frothy cap, with no shortage of delicate, sticky lace stuck to the glass. Citrusy aroma of grapefruit and orange, with hints of stone fruit, gooseberry and floral, piney hops.
It's not bad - flavours of grapefruit and tangerine dominate, supported by notes of bready, wheaty malts, subtle tropical fruit and apricot. Finishes with floral, grassy bitterness and hop resin, fading into a citrusy, piney, mildly acidic aftertaste that doesn't linger for long. Medium in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that prickles the palate continuously throughout each sip; smooth, soft mouthfeel and decent drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.78, a B+. The Generator didn't exactly wow me, but I finished my glass easily enough. This inhabits the grey zone between old school West Coast IPAs and modern hazy dry-hopped IPAs - that is to say, it offers a little from both columns A & B, but fails to satisfy my craving for either one of them. That's not to suggest there's anything especially wrong with this beer. It's merely OK, and a little lacking in personality, so for me it just kinda blends in with the crowd. I guess I'd try this again, but it's low priority.
