473 mL can from the brewery; dated Feb 8 2024 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a relatively clear golden-amber colour, topped with nearly two fingers of foamy, creamy white head that falls back over the next three or four minutes. A tight collar and sudsy cap live on, with a half-inch band of even lace clinging to the glass - looks pretty good so far. Lots of roasted coffee beans on the nose, with minor notes of dark chocolate, grainy malts, vanilla and apples.
The aroma was enticing for this java fiend, but its flavour profile lacks cohesion: that is to say, there's lots going on, and not all of it is complementary. The vanilla is immediately noticeable, with notes of latte, bready malts and wheaty grains also coming through. Hints of dark chocolate towards the finish, otherwise dominated by coffee grounds & coffee bitterness; sweet-ish aftertaste with vanilla loitering too long. Light-medium in body, with moderate carbonation that adds some crispness to this blonde ale's smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel.
Final Grade: 3.63, a B grade. Red Eye Coffee Blonde is ok, but inserting the word "vanilla" into its name would better prepare consumers for what they're about to imbibe. I actually really enjoyed its coffee flavours and aromas, but the heavy-handed vanilla presence kind of ruins it for me - more cacao nibs might've helped too, but less vanilla for sure. Better yet, why not leave it out entirely? I'm only joking, of course... maybe. Not really. Ok fine, I'm not a vanilla fan: certainly not in my coffee, and generally not in my beer, either. If you feel differently, maybe you'll love this.
