355 mL can from the brewery; dated Sep 2 2025 and served slightly chilled. This is a collaboration with Illbury and Goose, a clothing shop that is also located in London's OEV, not far from Powerhouse.
Pours a relatively clear, pale golden-orange colour, stirring up half an inch of loose, soapy white head that is in a hurry to be somewhere else. Sixty seconds or so later, I'm left with a sickly thin collar and a few wisps on the surface; lace production is very minimal. Nice colour, but otherwise ordinary looking. Bready malts and grainy sweetness on the nose, with hints of Rice Krispies, hibiscus and berries.
It tastes fine - pretty straightforward, with clean, grainy pale malts and bread leading the way. Fruity suggestions of hibiscus are also discernible, alongside suggestions of grassy, earthy hops and rice; crisp, dry conclusion. Light in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that prickles the palate with enthusiasm. It's easy to throw back, but otherwise it's a pretty average craft lager.
Final Grade: 3.59, a B grade. Powerhouse's Japanese Style Lager isn't anything to write home about, though I do appreciate the effort taken to brew a style of lager that is quite underrepresented in this province. Honestly, I could've done without the hibiscus entirely, but fortunately, it's not really significant enough to dampen the experience much, if at all. If nothing else, it gives this rice lager a bit of a unique personality - not enough to make me want to buy it repeatedly, but at least it's something. Worth testing out if you're passing by the OEV.
