473 mL can from the brewery; dated Jul 3 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy marigold colour, kicking up one finger of loose, frothy white head that fizzles within a couple of minutes' time. A tight collar of creamy suds lives on, with a delicate coat of spotty lace clinging to the glass - looks fine to me. I'm getting orange peel & juice on the nose, as well as hints of wheaty, bready malts, coriander spice and a flowery tisane note.
Nice flavours, with a strong showing from the citrus peel, which imparts big notes of orange zest, as well as some sweet orange juiciness. The malt backbone is very wheat-forward - bready & crackery, with coriander coming through by mid-sip and lasting into a spicy, herbal finish of chamomile; citrus peel bitterness fades into a spicy aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with moderately assertive carbonation that prickles the tongue continuously throughout each sip, remaining sharp for the entirety of the session. Decent drinkability for the style.
Final Grade: 3.76, squeaking out a respectable B+. Powerhouse's Porch Gazer is a competently-brewed witbier that I'd consider purchasing again - most likely during the summer months. When I bought this beer last month, I thought "witbier seems like an odd choice for a winter seasonal", but given the date it's clear that it had just been sitting around since last summer. It's still pretty tasty, in spite of its age, though the spicy/herbal back end is not really my cup of tea. Worth a look if you're passing through London next summer.
