473 mL can from the brewery; dated Sep 15 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy golden-amber colour, kicking up one finger of soapy white suds that deteriorates within two minutes' time. A frothy collar is the only remnant of note, encircling an otherwise barren surface; minimal lace production. The aroma is malty and a bit sweet, comprised of toasted bread, honeyed malts, slight caramel and faintly earthy hops.
A serviceable märzen without any real surprises: the flavour profile is malt-forward, offering up notes of toasted bread, lightly caramelized sugars and a touch of nuttiness. A bit of a biscuity note, too, with hints of earthy, herbal hops adding some bitterness on the back end; finishes with toasted malt sweetness lingering into a bittersweet aftertaste. Medium in body, with firm carbonation that gives a crisp bite to this lager's smooth & satisfying mouthfeel. That might be this beer's strongest feature, aside from perhaps its excellent drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.82, a B+. Powerhouse's Märzen isn't a worldbeater, but it's still a decent stab at this festive style. It grew on me over the course of this review - the visuals and aroma are fairly standard for the style, but I enjoyed the flavour profile and mouthfeel quite a bit. There's always room for improvement, but I feel like this is probably the best lager (of any type) that I've had from Powerhouse, at least so far. Worth sampling next autumn - a stein or two will do ya.
