1st review of this beer on BA (I just added it). But its an older one, I first had it in 2014. 35 ibu.
Has a pretty malty and dark appearance by most ESB standards. Not even orange, this is a deep red ale in appearance.
Thick white head 4/5" and retentive and expressive lacing. If I wasn't thrilled by the color, the head was a work of art and science. Nose is heavy on the crystal malt more than anything else. Light herbal hop feel. I guess by comparison, Red Hook's flagship ESB is hoppier.
Taste, I dunno, this was more of a malt bomb of an esb than anything. 6.5%, eh, you're kind of outside of style guidelines and perhaps the malt quantity is partly to blame. 35 ibu should be in this style's wheelhouse, but it comes off closer to a 20 ibu feel. Additionally, the upped alcohol isn't doing anyone favors in terms of where it brings this full bodied beer to, causes a drinkability detriment.
Even though it was an affordable bomber ($4.99) the format (22oz) didn't do it any favors beyond the abv and maltiness. Worth a tick, but not a repeat.
