-jet colored can pour with a thin, tan foam cap and an aroma of toasted malt and a bit of molasses.
The most prominent flavor is toasted malt with a bit of char. There is a slightly salty aspect (miso?) which balances syrupy sweetness. The hop bitterness is is significant for the style.
The mouthfeel is smooth but not thick.
I like this brew and would have it again.

A: opaque; very dark brown in color; 1 finger finely pored medium brown head that receded to a thin collar; very nice lacing;
S: deeply roasted grain first, then a bit of salt added in, then overwhelmingly soy sauce;
T: deeply roasted grain and bittersweet chocolate up front; there's an undercurrent of salt throughout; soy sauce is in the background from the middle through the finish; the minor saltiness lasts through the aftertaste - not significant, but noticeable;
M: medium bodied; moderate carbonation; moderately dry finish; hides the ABV well;
O: very interesting; the soy sauce would generally be a sign of an off flavor - here, it's intentional; there's just enough to be noticed, but not enough to be obnoxious; relatively light body for such a big beer;

DATE: April 17, 2021... OCCASION: enjoying a family TV night with a beer I have been waiting for the right night to crack open....unfamiliar wit miso as a soup, this should be interesting! GLASSWARE: Citrabellum pokal tulip... pours a lively jet-black body whose dividing line between it and its light tan, thickened head constantly shifts it bubbling demarcation... a pleasant, airy aroma begins with cocoa, light roasted coffee, fragrant flowers, and a candied, bubble gum-like suggestion that makes this a bit different from an imperial stout's usual trademark... nice, thickening rings as the glass drains... each sip is a grainy, textured draw with activity at the teeth, a bit of warmth in the mouth, and a lingering presence at the throat--but all of this belies its eleven-plus heft... it also has a smooth, frothy consistency that approximates a latte--a comfort drink, for sure... soft cocoa, roasted coffee, vanilla, and a lactic appreciation that makes this a dessert-like experience... this one came courtesy of BA's Extreme Beer Fest, and what a treat--a Japanese flavor from a Brazilian brewer is just another example of a healthy beer culture...

It’s more imperial Russian than imperial Japanese, but it’s a fine brew. A bit strong, but fine. Not sure if an additional sake type sting would have helped, but it’s still a fine brew.

Roast from start to finish. Starts with mild sweetness which evolves into a dry, mild salty, bitter finish. Old School Russian Imperial Stout, with modern twist of bitterness and saltiness. Well Done

This one had a beautiful color and a nice aroma, but it just tasted bitter to me. I didn't really notice any hint of Miso in the taste, and the bitterness reminded me more of an IPA than a Russian Imperial Stout.

Did not expect this one to be nearly as good as it was. Overall kind of a light stout in terms of roast character, but that is what let the miso really shine. Strong, roasty umami flavors and a subtle sweetness made this a very unique and delicious beer. Would be my pick for best in show at the '21 extreme beer fest.

Medium black with a finger of brown foam and light lacing. Aromas of roasted and chocolate malt, soy, and miso. Taste is much the same, but it delivers so well with the roasted malt, slight booze and earth up front with the miso and chocolate finishing for the second half of the sip. Medium bodied, velvet smooth, slightly smoky and full bodied. Really well made

This was one of my last beers from the fun Extreme Beer Festival. Poured a very dark brown color with with a beautiful creamy beige head and excellent curtain lacing. Nice initial smell and taste of miso, pleasant and not overpowering. Dark chocolate flavors take control with some dark roast coffee. Probably the best looking of the EBF beers, enjoying this.

Black Miso from Japas Cervejaria. Received on 20/1/21 for the Extreme Beer Fest – Cyberspace (2021) from Half-Time, Poughkeepsie, NY. $ 109.99 (Including tax and shipping). This is a 16 oz can ($ 0.702/oz). Stored at home at 42 degrees. Reviewed 10/2/21. (Note: I use DD/MM/YY protocol.)
Undated can. Served at 57 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 61.5 degrees.
Appearance – 4.25.
First pour – Amber Brown (SRM 18), clear.
Body – Black (SRM 40), opaque. When rear-lite, still opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum five cm, aggressive center pour), fawn, high density, short retention, diminishing to a 10 to 21 mm crown with a jagged edge, and a heaped partial cap. Chunks of lacing remain as the head retracts. Second pour produces tight 0.5 cm head.
Lacing – Excellent! Narrow rows of tiny to small bubbles connected by short columns, with short stalactites, slowly evolving into finely torn curtain lacing.
Aroma – 4.25 – Heavy roasted malt and much lighter miso, no hops, no yeast.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins with heavy roasted malt. No hops, no malt, no yeast. Miso is barely noticeable on the taste. Slightly bitter. No alcohol (11.5 % ABV, as marked on the container) flavor or aroma, but a transitory alcohol burn appears then dies after each swallow.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, approaching creamy, soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 (After deducting 0.25 point for undated container) Basic RIS with touch of miso – interesting.

16 oz. can
Pours dark brown black with a creamy frothy light tan foam head. Notes of dark roasted malts, baking chocolate, licorice, espresso coffee, some dark fruit, plum, grape, dark berry, dried fruit, charred burnt bitterness, dark toasted bread crust, vanilla, molasses, sweet caramelized brown sugar, dark toffee, nutty dark caramel, hint of soy, savory umami notes, red miso, with earthy herbal piney hops. Feels medium plus bodied, creamy and soft with smooth moderate carbonation. Overall a real nice imperial stout with red miso.

Poured from a can into a snifter glass
Appearance – The beer pours a very deep brown color with a one finger head of tan colored foam. The head has a great level of retention, very slowly fading over time to leave a ton of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is very heavy of a sweeter chocolate smell mixed with dark brown bread and roasted malt smells. Along with these aromas comes notes of coffee as well as a bit of caramel and molasses. Rounding it all out is a touch of herb and a bit of earthiness.
Taste – The taste begins with a massively roast and very toasty malt flavor mixed with some dry cocoa and a bit of coffee. Upfront there is a little bit of brown sugar and molasses sweetness along with a touch of herbal hop. As the taste advances some of the sweet initially decreases with a tiny bit of a miso taste working its way onto the tongue. The miso grows stronger as the taste advances, but never gets overpowering, adding just a nice subtle, but appreciable flavor to the darker flavors, complimenting them rather well. At the end a touch of alcohol booziness comes to the tongue and is joined by a slight increase in the sweet and the hop, leaving one in the end, with a subtle miso, but very rich and roasty stout flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is thick and creamy with a carbonation level that is rather low. The creaminess and thickness is awesome for the big rich and dark tastes of the brew. Mouth Coating and big in smooth. Well-done!
Overall - This was a very fun brew. Prior to drinking, I was expecting something more wasabi like in nature, and was worried that it would be a spicy brew. All said however, this brew was very balanced and smooth, all while having a ton of flavor. Not sure I’ll ever be able to get it outside the BeerAdvocate Extreme beer Cyberfest of 2021, but if I can, I likely will!
