Novocaine for the Soul moves us further across the pond and closer to an English-style Barleywine. Aged for a year in Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels, Novocaine is dark amber in color and is richer and sweeter than its more American counterpart (Stuck on Stoopid). A strong malt backbone adds texture and sweetness to this one with notes of dark fruit and toffee.

One the pour is a deep-hued amber base barleywine, with thinly dispersed carbonation that bubbles up on an aggressive pour, but settles quickly into a flat liquid.
The nose initially greets with some mildly astringent stewed fruits, but after some time to warm up and open in the glass, there's much more richness. Sweet toffee, dark fruit, caramel, and a well-balanced malt base all emerge quickly and create an overall profile that you'd expect from the style.
The palate hits immediately with a lot of dark fruit on a heavy malt background. There is a touch of astringency right off the bat, but it softens quickly. There's a good balance on the finish, with the barrel complimenting that rich malt and adding a bit of oak to the tail as well. As it sits on the tongue you do get some esters that I could do without, but flavor profile overall hits many of the marks.
The body is the one big thing that stood out to me in terms of what this beer needed to improve upon. It needed more weight; with the flavor profile bringing notes of a Barrel-Aged Barleywine and the mouthfeel leaning more towards the weight of a Dunkel, it became a bit distracting.
