I had originally been planning a Philly excursion today, but between the crappy rainy weather forecast for the totality of my potential visit, a high school class meet-up this evening & a definite trip to PHL on Monday, I aborted the trip on the launching pad. Goose Island (PHL) has been releasing a keg of a BCBS variant every Monday in December & while I can only make 24 & 31 December, it is still compelling enough for me to head east. Today becomes a Crabbie day, instead.

From the Bottle: "Real Crabbie's refreshment!"; "A malt beverage made with natural lemon flavor, and a squeeze of inspiration."

How exciting to be this beer's first reviewer & rater! It all began with the Pop! of the cap. I had not had much success with previous aggro C-Line pours of their beers, but hope springs eternal … only to be shot down. It briefly fizzed up with a finger of fizzy, foamy, bone-white head, but its retention was so poor that it quickly became naught more than a memory. Color was a deeply-hazy/lightly-cloudy Pale-Straw (SRM = 1 - 2). Hmm. I have no reference for this sort of thing, but they did cop to "Cloudy" on the label. Nose smelled fruity, very lemony and mostly tart so it was not one of those cloying lemonade-flavored drinks like Country Time, or so I hoped. Mouthfeel was kinda thin & watery. The taste, while slightly sweet, was still quite lemony & tart. Good! Again, I dislike sweet & I really dislike artificial sweetness. This reminded me of Fanta Limon, which I first encountered on a 1985 Med Cruise. Both/either/or would be a good mixer with Tanqueray Gin, my old standby until the craft beer revolution really took off. The lemon flavor would work well with the gin's botanicals. Finish was in that grey area between semi-sweet & semi-dry, but I would not argue one over the other.

This was my fourth of their offerings today & I guess that my bottom line is that while they are worthy of inclusion, they are not really stand-alone beers. They all seem better suited as mixers, but as usual, YMMV.
