Undated can poured into a tulip but should be pretty fresh (maybe a month old?) given the friend who sent it to me. Pours an attractive but lighter gold color with moderate haze and a foamy white initial head. Brief head retention but a nice foam cap and some solid lacing.
Punchy aroma of of grapefruit, orange, mango, berries, and grape skins, but not overly bold for a 9% IIPA. Grassy but not really dank. Some light, crackery malt characteristics. As the beer warms, the blueberry really comes out, which is wonderful and makes the sum of the parts that much better. Nose is lovely but it's much milder than I expected based on other 8-9% double hazies from Arvon.
Taste is sweet grapefruit heavy, especially on the back end. Nice citrus, tropical fruits, and berry notes. Again grassy but not dank. Very dry and pithy grapefruit finish (my favorite part of the taste profile) with a pleasant minerally note. Hard to believe this is 9% because it drinks very light and there's zero hint of alcohol or heaviness.
Smooth and creamy but, again, a touch light for both the size and compared to other Arvon hazies. Surprisingly easy drinking given the ABV.
Definitely in the lesser half of many IPAs I've enjoyed from Arvon. But even their "weaker" offerings (IMO) are rock solid drinkers. I especially expected something more boundary-pushing given the subtle Human Centipede (movie) symbolism on the front of the can!
