"In cohoots with Cape May Brewing Co." reads the label, to be fair. This may not be black, but it's as dark brown as almost any stout. There's some biege head on top of a very very dark brown liquid now within a clear glass Imperial pint mug. It ended up there after being released from a pint can. The aroma is mildly and indistinctively of some malt and hops. It drinks like a stout light, a good one. The same roasted malt flavor is there, as is the mild bite of hops expected from stouts. But. it drinks lighter across the tongue than a good stout, in a good way. This has a refreshing aspect to it that is better than many stouts. It also has much more taste complexity than black lagers. A little more hoppy than most stouts and certainly more hoppy and layered than most lagers, this works. The head sustains, but the lacing is negligible. Looks aside, an IPA with the roasted malt character of a stout works here.

(16 oz can, canned on 01.11.22; purchased single off shelf at Joe Canal's, Marlton... poured into my Human Robot 0.5L Tubinger mug)
L: dark brown liquid, moderately opaque; fantastically moussy, voluminous foam, coffee with cream-colored, holding steady and strong... the 'Cold Black India Pale Ale' tag sold me... rocky, broken cap won't abate; lacing crusty, good not great
S: upholstery cleaner, mocha mint, charred floral arrangement.... fragrantly floral; grapefruit and lemon zest highlights, subtle peppery accent... excellent intensity and expression
T: dang!, ripping hop resins and redolent rich malts; peppery, minty aftertaste, of course with an underlying roasty, sweet coffee accent to its dense, cleaved, toasty malt construct... pungent, piney bitterness (droooool)
F: silky yet prickly... resin-drenched, foam-fanned out, light-medium bodied blanket touch... moderate degree of warmth; bitterness stunning and electrifying... weightless flow, good gawd; substantial in its brief swell
O: love its bold attack and cut dryness... actually drinks like a hopped af black lager; eminently, habitually drinkable... I don't know what more can be done to improve upon its execution; well done y'all! (1922)

Picked this up recently at Joe Canal’s in Woodbridge as this was available via a single can. Thought that this would be a Black IPA based on it's description but this was so unique that it almost deserved to be placed into an entirely new category on here since this was unlike anything that I ever had before. In the end, that was a good thing as a clean an IPA as I've ever had!
Of course, this had a cola brown pour to it with a nice edge of salmon and garnet that shone as this was held up to the light. A ton of bubbly, thick mocha head topped this off as it took it's time to settle down. A bit of layered lacing stuck around as I worked my way through this but like the consistency of this beer, that ended up settling and sliding down. Loads of dark bread, chocolate, and piney hops were in the nose with roasted malt, coffee beans, and subtle herbal notes underneath everything as this had a wonderful richness and depth to it. Somewhat dry, quite earthy, and shockingly crisp, this didn't last in my glass long as this was a mix of familiarity and intrigue in one as this was quite a split beer.
That was because of it being part lager and yeast, and brewed by two different entities as the end result was easily greater than the sum of it's parts. Couldn't read the writing on the bottom of the can but this felt fresh and inviting as the clean finish and snappy bite left me wanting the other iteration of this. Thankfully, I have it here as I look forward to having it in the next week or two. This was easily one of the best, and most unique, collaborations that I've had in quite some time!

Clear, dark brown body; thick, frothy head, light khaki colored; sticky; rocky. Intense aromatic hop spiciness in the nose; floral and pine resin notes; pungent; mild cocoa. Mild chocolate malt base; spicy overtones; cinnamon and anise; moderate to intense hop bitterness. Medium-light body; starts smooth on the palate and finishes with a delicate prickliness; crisp; semi-dry mouthfeel overall.
I wasn't sure what a cold India pale is, so had to look it up (I've seen the style of late). As I understand things, pilsner malt and lager yeast are utilized to produce a "crisp" IPA. As a fan of Cascadian dark ales, I looked forward to trying out this beer. I am not disappointed. It has all the elements of a well-made Cascadian dark ale with a bit of lager smoothness, yet it also leaves an overall IPA feel on the palate. This is a very nice beer.

Pours a dark brown, almost black color. Looks like Coca Cola. Thick, velvety tan colored head forms on the beer. The head settles in leaving a thin layer of foam that shows very nice retention. Some sticky lacing coats the glass as the beer is consumed. Aroma has notes of cocoa, lightly roasted malts, some notes of pine, tobacco and some light ash.
Taste follows the nose with notes of roasted malts, cocoa, a slight charred or almost ashy character comes through with the malt as well. The hops have some slight piney and woody notes, but there is also a generic fruitiness with some light grassy notes on the back end. The roasted and charred notes are subtle enough that they in no way clash with the more fruity/piney hops. The lager yeast is present most in how clean and crisp this one drinks. The feel is light, crisp, and dry. Dry throughout and through the finish as well. There is a lingering moderate bitterness on the finish.
This is fantastic - I love how everything works together so well. The lager yeast makes it clean and dry (something I personally tend to like in IPAs). From my perspective, this is a must try if you get the chance.

Pours a beautiful dark dark brown with a super dense creamy light brown head that just never quits. Ridiculous retention, some great lacing too. We are off to a great start…
I smelled this the second I opened the can on the counter. You know that hoppy smell when a brewery is brewing, this beer encapsulates it perfectly. Hiding behind that is a nice deep burnt/roasty aroma and some cocoa.
Taste comes in waves, first wave is incredibly hoppy in an earthy/herbal kind of way; second wave dark chocolate and black coffee; third wave lingering grassy hop aftertaste.
Medium body, a rich but incredibly smooth mouthfeel; the lager yeast is noticeable as this thing finish so clean; medium bitterness. It benefits the flavors immensely cause it lets this aftertaste of hoppy coffee breath just shine on
