this is an unreal idea for a series of beers, considering these guys partner with a bakery and use some of the same specialty grains. these wasted loaf beers are made like kvass, with mashed bread crusts and unsold loaves, pretty epic really, and this one was done in the dark munich style, although i dont believe its a lager, they use some cool old bread for it, so its kvass before anything else i reckon, and a really delicious brew, the darkest of the beers i had in here. it has a ton of wood fired character to it, like i taste the charred floury crusts of the bread itself in here, not quite smoked or anything, but from a fire, very earthy, primal even, its awesome. there are some darker grains in here too, light cocoa, molasses, and the actual bread for sure. some nuttiness in the flavor, fire roasted character, toffee, coffee, and raw chocolate. its hearty and almost healthy, and has a cool european yeast complexion thats subtle but distinct in here. its smooth and light for its color, very lively, way more bubbly than some of the others i had here, and a really cool use of this old bread, which definitely flavors the beer. i love what these guys are doing, and this was a lot of fun to drink!
