Formerly Village IPA

Traditional English Style... smooth malt character balanced by fresh cedar and floral hop flavor with a striking copper color. Not overly bitter, the rich mouthfeel finishes with a slight biscuit sweetness.

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Jun 7 2019 and served slightly chilled. A self-described English style IPA, which you don't see a lot of these days.

Pours clear amber-orange, producing just over an inch of bubbly, frothy, off white-tinged head that slinks away within five minutes or so. An attractive coat of banded lacing has been left in its wake, with a wide collar and a thin, creamy cap also remaining in place; it's a good looking beer, of that there can be no doubt. Its aroma is rather malt-forward, with bready, biscuity malts, toasted grains and a caramelized sweetness coming through alongside some earthy, leafy notes; I'm also getting a few hints of muddled citrus and resiny hops.

A respectable rendition of its style: sort of a hybrid of the English and American variations, IMO, which makes sense given the use of Centennial, Cascade and Glacier hops. Its malt base is sturdy, supplying a bready, grainy malt note and hints of caramel/butterscotch sweetness, with hints of orchard fruits and orange developing by mid-sip. The tail end features more of an earthy, resiny, slightly floral hop bitterness that lasts through the finish and briefly into the aftertaste. Medium in body, with low carbonation levels that weakly brush against the palate, resulting in a very smooth mouthfeel. I had no trouble finishing off the can, but one of these would be enough for me on any given night.

Final Grade: 3.72, a B grade. Hespeler's Village IPA is good, but not quite great - indeed, I can understand why this one's combination of a robust malt bill with an old school, resiny hop profile might not be everyone's cup of tea. It's a far cry from the hazy dry-hopped stuff crowding the shelves these days, but I'm just fine with that: no, I wasn't blown away by this beer, but I liked it enough to consider picking it up again in the future. If you can find a fresh can, don't be afraid to pull the trigger on this one.

473 ml can served cold into a pint glass. LCBO purchase for around $3.25 CDN

Appearance - Fairly hazy dark copper colored brew with orange hues. Two fingers of thick and foamy white head are poured, good staying power and bright white curtain lacing at the edges of the glass.

Smell - Fairly malty, with lots of caramel aromas, weak citrus with grapefruit and orange being most prominent. Underlying figs and plums in there too.

Taste - Quite malty, some buttery diacetyl. Middling bitterness that is earthy with some orange hints in there. More APA than IPA with standout hops.

Mouthfeel - Medium-heavy bodied, a little sticky and syrupy, carbonation is alright.

Overall - Village IPA is passable both in a good and bad way. This has potential with some tweaks and less diacetyl flavor and smell because it is a great looking brew.

Can from LCBO, poured a hazy unfiltered amber with a puffy 2 finger cap...aroma?...Oh Oh our old friend butterscotch (diacetyl) in the aroma...not conditioned long enough, pretty much overpowers the subtle hop compliment...taste has potential...caramel malts with the butterscotch (diacetyl) undertone, up front, goes very bitter and unbalanced in the finish with an alpha oil astringency...hop boil too long. ...these guys are like Descendants, they need to tweak their process to get some off tastes out of their beers

Appearance is a nice golden colour with a small fluffy head, with nice lacing on my glass. The smell is slightly sweet with hints of hops. The taste is hoppy and malty, sweet which seems to be typical of this style. An enjoyable brew
