very well done black ipa, a style i do hope comes back into fashion at some point, always been a fan. this is pretty classic, tidy, bitter, i thought with the name it might have sage or something in it, but if it does, its really mild, hops and roasted barley dominate in here, but i like the intensity, its smooth and soft feeling still and as such quite drinkable as these go, a nice recipe and good execution. obsidian shine on this, average off white head, aroma of near burnt coffee, earthy dark barley, and spicy northwestern hops, old school like cascade, high alpha, well extracted, not sure the varietals in here, piney and herbal with some dankness as it warms, and the flavor follows the nose, with the hops getting a pretty early start. white grapefruit and green pinecone notes, some resin and sap, then a brighter finish with a lemon note, bitter but not overdosed or vegetal. its on the palate awhile, oils swirling and some definite almost meaty body lingering, love the wintery darkness this brings, but also the counterpoint of how fresh the hops present. seems c type to me, centennial possible, maybe even simcoe with that grapefruit thing, gin-like herbaceous properties and i could see sage late perhaps, as a hop nuance anyway, menthol, smooth and drawn out, rather bitter, roasty but not overly intense, real good. a winner on their beer menu, we had a blast in here too, definitely recommend a visit when in reno!
