solid and classic take on the style, one of the cleaner and better beers i had in here on this visit, pretty traditionally styled, maybe a little stronger in alcohol perception than is common, but its not out of place for me, and overall this is a nice pleasant drinker that warms up well, is long and smooth from the oats, keeps it simple on the grain side, and is dry to finish, could have had nothing but these in here and been happy. a little muted shine on this, slightly thinner head but nearly an inch tall, close to black, some alluring viscosity. the aroma here is mostly roast but its soft, not intense or astringent, not bitter or over the top, but deep and earthy and sort of abyssal and patient. its grainy with the oats, notes of cocoa powder and maybe trace vanilla, but this is dry, a little bready fermentation note too. the flavor is solid, roasty of course with dark chocolate and a good coffee wrinkle, but most notable and appreciated here is the more or less absence of sweeter middle malts, no molasses or caramel or toffee to me, keeps it deep and focused, simple in a good way, and definitely high oat, lathered up and creamy feeling, nice with the bitter back end the dark grain brings. pretty quick to finish, chocolate recall, almost faintly english on the yeast side but subtle, evolves as it sits. nice beer, light tang if i look for it, but pretty well executed overall. i like this place, good cocktails too!
