a belgian red, not really a dark, but probably the closest by style, some hops to this, subtle belgian yeast and light pleasant astringency combating some malt richness, well made beer with a lot of character yet still very drinkable. brick red in color and clear but not crazy bright either, good carbonation, a short off white creamy head with good retention, fine carbonation, and a slightly nutty nose at first that starts kind of baked and warm but moves into being hoppy and classically belgian later on, white pepper and clove and subtle pine and citrus pith, not really bitter, but balanced, some white wine character to the yeast, lots going on here, in a way its like a redder belgian pale, fresh to me, light tang, raisin, and even cherry to it, good malt depth, and the flavor is right there with the aroma, some spruce and even gin from the hops, almond, toffee, but not real sweet, earthy but also sort of enriched to me, peppery late, warms up well, quick carbonation, a candy sugar type nuance, brown sugar, lightly dank. different and good, not just a generic american made belgian style, not phenolic at all, subtle but dynamic. the beer seemed better across the board here this year than it did last year when i visited, a little more technically sound and refined in the ones i had. dug this one.
