a neat take on vienna lager, darker than many, like chestnut colored, even brown in lower light, deep and not quite as clear as i expect in this style, big size bubbles collecting into a near inch of off white head on top. the nose here is toasty and bready and baked, cozy and autumnal or wintery to me, less sweet in the nose, that kilned richness still present though, toffee and raisin, old world lager yeast but mellow on the ferment, light cocoa to me but not yet pushing into that chocolate malt realm really. the flavor is also bready, bran chex and coffee cake, brown sugar but not that sweet, an almost black tea type depth to it, and lighter in body for how it looks, some minerality there and a bit of residual sugar extending it, crusty toasted artisan bread, and overall just a really nice malt profile, quite a bit more complexity here than i think is standard in the style, even if its less polished overall than the best of these, i like it being beefier and deeper and different, a cool take on the style, like a red lager with european elements, not really hoppy at all, but it has enough going on without that. smooth and drinkable, good carbonation, not a style i usually gravitate towards, but they made this real attractive to me with the added grain depth...
