Pours a dark dark brown with a little mahogany blush in the corners. Good little coffee-foam coloured head that dissipates to just a single land mass pretty soon.
Nose is immediate upon the pour with sweet roast and definite molasses. There's some sweet spice as I dig, More roast and a bit of chocolate.
Flavour is interesting. The molasses is notable, and reminds me of an old homebrew my brother and I made way back when. The chicory comes across and gives it a really unique character across the middle of the palate, muted and distinctly woody, it's not smoky per se, but it reminds me of that vein of character... like it feels like it would go really well with really good smoky barbecue. The transition on the backend from the chicory back into the deeply roasty bordering on but not quite reaching burnt malts almost gives a similar impression as lactose-stouts (though I'm fairly certain that this beer does not utilize lactose), before pushing into the earthy almost herbacious-meets-bakers-chocolate bitterness of the finish. There's an almost black-pepper like component to it as well that I feel like has been dancing around everything else.
Medium body with a dry bitter finish and sharp carbonation.
This is a unique stout and one that I enjoy even if it wouldn't be my go to everyday stout, yadda mean?
