Pours a really dark rusty amber colour with a nice fluffy beige head that leaves wonderful lacing behind.
Nose is a little thin, but ultimately more fruit forward than I had expected. Stone fruits and a touch of honey and toasty malts and some light earthy malts. Not the profile I was expecting, but it's interesting.
Flavour has some of that same character. More fruit forward and almost kind of a pseudo-trappist-character to it. Stone fruit, raisin, some tobacco, creamy, I get the earthy bite of the rye... this is a really interesting brew. Barreling adds a bunch of creamy/vanilla/and a bit of the spice and alcohol astringency on the back end.
Body is creamy, but also somewhat vegetally sharp, with a sweet bump in the middle, and a big earthy bitter boost to the second half. Seems to be a combination of rye/hops/barrel.
This is a really interesting brew. It's not one I would see myself reaching for all the time, but it's an interesting combination and well layered.
