355 mL can from TBS; no canning date and served slightly chilled. This is the first time I've tried any beer with the Formosa Springs label, including back when it was still a member of the Brick/Waterloo portfolio.
Pours a clear, pale brassy colour, stirring up less than a finger of loose, bubbly white head that disintegrates within sixty seconds. A frothy collar lives on, encircling a patch of film on the surface; minimal lace production. There are some bready, doughy malts and graininess on the nose, alongside hints of boiled vegetables and corn chips.
It's alright, but I'm not a big fan. Flavours of doughy malts, yellow tortilla, coarse grains and bread at the forefront, with boiled vegetables and corny sweetness rounding out the back end. Sweet finish that fades to mineral water in the aftertaste. Light in body, with fairly low carbonation and a smooth, almost slick mouthfeel that doesn't make for a very refreshing lager.
Final Grade: 3.03, an underwhelming C+. Formosa Springs Light isn't anything special, and there are plenty of Ontario-brewed light lagers that I would take before this one. Sweeter than most light beers, which isn't really a plus for this style - a boring, watery macro light would surely be less flavourful, but it would also be more drinkable IMO. I guess it comes down to the fact that I don't really care for that corny, vegetal note - if this were a regular-strength adjunct lager, it'd be a bit more tolerable, but in the context of a light lager? No thanks.
