The Altbier (a German reference to old-style beer) is a lesser-known German top-fermented Ale from before the proliferation of bottom fermented lagers. Our brew uses classic German malts to form a rich and toasty foundation, some highly roasted wheat for complexity and a deep amber hue, classic noble hops for a crisp balance, and a traditional clean ale yeast that was cold aged to be smooth and easy drinking! Raise a glass (or two) this Oktoberfest!

A chestnut body is dark enough and looks a little hazy at first, and closer inspection doesn’t clear up whether the difficulty seeing through the beer is color or content based. A nitro-like foam builds from the etched bottom of the glass.

Nose is caramel, date, red wine grape, and medium toast, leaning a little more sweet and fruity than toasted. Scents are not too powerful.

A bit more toast in the taste - including a little bit of blackness on the edges. The roasted wheat actually seems to come through in the toast notes. There’s still a little toffee-like sweetness, but also some light roast coffee. First sips had a little of that robust wine grape, but it seems to be enveloped by the noted flavors before long. Late in the glass a little banana note (wheat again?) comes out.

Medium heft, this doesn’t seem quite as easy drinking as other Altbiers I’ve had, could be the wheat. Balanced fairly well, the noble hops used aren’t too distinctive providing more of a neutral bitterness.

Not too bad. The feel is throwing me off the most. There is a toasted grain aspect versus a somewhat earthy aspect I’ve liked in others. It’s definitely not just a brown ale, though. This is one I feel my rating could go up a little.
