In 1862, General Zaragoza led 600 men of the Mexican army to defend the city of Puebla against a French invasion force of over 6000. Much like this brew, the situation was dark, but with great bravery and leadership on May 5th they were able to drive away the French in what would become a catalyzing moment for the national identity of Mexico. This Gose style ale may seem dark and intimidating at a glance, but upon first sip it is a celebration of bright tart lime, sweet floral coriander, and a touch of flavor enhancing salt. A special malt product from Germany provides the midnight hue without any chocolate or roast flavors, and the combination of coriander and lime peel in the boil as well as lime puree added during fermentation bring it all together. Take a moment to raise a glass of Zaragose to Ignacio Zaragoza. Salud!

On tap at brewery:
A surprise with the dark brown look, but that’s actually as designed and expected based on the description. Head is ok for a brief period.
Nose is a mix of lime and salt with a bit of dry earthy spice that I take as the coriander. The dark malt doesn’t seem to bring any roast or toast to the party here or in the taste. Speaking of, the salinity level is nice, and while lime takes center stage, there’s a bit of a non-fresh citrus sour tang that reminds me of the first goses I had years ago.
A fairly soft feel (light carbonation with salinity) and a dry finish that washes the moderate tart/tang almost fully off my palate. Definitely a fun brew.
