Good looking pour. Rich black body with a massive tan coloured head that seems to stubborn to truly recede. Thick lacing along the glass as well.
Reasonably dry aroma up front. Pleasantly roasty with some chocolate and a bit of ash. A nice take on the style.
Flavour takes a much bolder tack compared to the aroma. Rich with a spicy kick to it that almost gives the impression of barreling, though there were no barrels involved. Bitter coffee/bakers chocolate and some richer cocoa-chocolate are in there, but overall this is heavily roasted malts with a bit of creaminess and it's just really well put together. It seems like it's difficult to find a 'basic' imperial/russian stout these days that hasn't been barreled or had half a patisserie dumped into the vats, and so I find it a welcome return to a bygone era.
Creamy rich body with a bold bitterness to it and appropriate carbonation, this is quite enjoyable.
I've not had... much? any? experience with Future Primitive to this point other than seeing them on the shelves, but this is a strong first* impression.

can into glass
Quickly receding, light brown head. Pours a bit like thin, heavily used motor oil. Very dark brown and thick. good amount of dark beige lacing on the glass, as the level drops. Aroma starts off with a toffee tinged, deeply roasted grain and toasted wood with a little alcohol character at the back end. Taste phase starts with a big wallop of burnt timber, but not in a bad way. Roasting the barley malt to such a degree, is similar to roasting coffee beans to the limit, to obtain French roast and on to espresso, as well. The sheer strength of the roast level, crowds out all else but maybe a touch of non-sweet toffee, towards the end of the taste, but the finish is largely ultra-roasted grain.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque black in the glass with a one finger brown head that is sturdy for a few minutes, then dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dark toasted and biscuit malt, malted milk, coffee and mild cocoa. Flavor is dark toasted malt, coffee, molasses, licorice and and touch of smoke. Some char show up in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. A solid, dark, lightly smoky imperial stout with great coffee and charry toasted malt notes. A little cocoa and licorice. Flavor starts slowly, then gently builds in dark malt and coffee, leaving a very satisfying coffee and toasted malt finish. This can says 10% so this batch may be a bit bigger than the normal run; ABV is well covered, so it works for me.
