Poured from a 12 ounce can dated 2020 into a snifter at 55 degrees.
Look- Deep amber, translucent, visible small particulate, off white sudsy head, average head retention, below average lacing.
Smell- Raisin, toffee, oak, high strength of scent.
Taste- Oak, barley, grassy, toffee, slight citrus, mildly sweet, highly strength of flavor.
Feel- Medium body, slightly below average carbonation, moderately bitter, mildly sweet, moderately creamy, moderately mouth warming, mildly mouth coating, highly astringent.
Overall- Look was more amber and less brown than I expected. The bouquet was nice, but simple. The flavor was dominated by malt and oak with no whiskey or dried fruit character. The body was thinner than expected with a high amount of astringency that detracted from both the feel and flavor. Overall I hoped this beer would deliver much more complexity and depth.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a slightly hazy, medium to dark orange with a fine, one finger white head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt, oaky and woody vanilla, dates, plums and a touch of citrus and grassy hops. Flavor is dry caramel and candi malt, woody oak, raisins, mixed citrus and citrus hops. Lightly hopped bitter finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. It's been a while since I've had an American style barleywine, but this is close to those I remember, with more citrusy than dark dried fruit and some hop bitterness. The hops a mild to moderate and this is not one of the crossover American BW / triple IPA styles (where did those go?). There is good woody oak barrel character but slight vanilla. A bit laid back, but enjoyable and an uncommon style of barleywine I'm glad to drink again.
