On-tap in Meridian ID; served in a 10oz snifter.
A: Dark, opaque black pour with absolutely no head and minimal lace; however the brew leaves that lovely brown film on the glass that one would expect at 11% + abv.
S: Dark black roasted malt, bourbon, licorice and star anise; char, espresso. Booze is subdued, though the barrel is apparent.
T: Lovely bourbon and dark caramel, oak; some char and bitterness reminiscent of espresso or strong fresh coffee; that licorice note is mild but present, with a touch of spice. Again, not boozy, with a nice present bitterness on the finish as the malty/bourbon sweetness fades. Enjoyable and well-executed, if a bit one-dimensional.
MF: Dry, sticky, and viscous, with that twinge of alcohol presence expected with a BBA stout. Full mouthfeel, but not really heavy or chewy.
O: Pretty delicious, for sure. Tried side by side with two vintages of BCBS as well as BA Dark Star, and while it isn’t quite as complex, chewy, and bourbon-y as those brews, it is a good BBA stout.
