barrel aged wild ale in collaboration with de garde, batch one here, courtesy of my friend who opened his entire collection to me during my visit, thankful for him! this is cool stuff, a rarity at this point i assume, paper label on it so i wonder if that means it was made at the original location, not totally sure, but its a cool beer, holding up well a few years old i believe. pale golden colored brew, lightly hazy straw colored, with an inch of airy white head on top. smells like wine barrels, stone fruit, old brett, and earthy wheat, a bit more piquant and even lambic-esque than some of the other older wild types we had from these guys last weekend, more of the de garde complexity in the ferment, or maybe my mind is just playing tricks on me, but this seems a little different than the others in that way. super mature as expected, more than just tartness, more than just funky brett, it all combines so well. there is a certain time element to this thats almost an ingredient, almost has a flavor, like the beyond just the barrel treatment, hard to explain, but its tangible here. i get dried apricot and mango notes, rose wine notes, stale biscuit, light sweetness, and hearty oak. its sturdy but lively, old but bright, and almost entirely yeast driven, like even kind of uninteresting without it. a cool fusion of these two legendary breweries, and a really fun bottle to share. maybe not able to last forever in the cellar though, so if you still have one, i would drink it soonish, some light fade already happening...
