Imperial stout brewed with UK and continental European malt. Aged for a year in Heaven Hills Bourbon barrels and lightly back blended with freshly brewed beer to balance out the robust bourbon backbone. Finally rested on Ethiopian cacao nibs and Madagascar vanilla.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, a bit fizzy, appearing opaque in the glass with a two finger milk chocolatre head with great retention and solid lacing despite the fizz at the start. Aroma of dark toasted malt, bourbon, vanilla, milk chocolate and mild dark dried fruit; inviting. Flavor follows, with dark toasted malt, bourbon, vanilla, light milk chocolate, dried plums and a touch of oak, particularly in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. I was a big fan of the base Sad Wings last year and this looked like a promising variant. It has a similar profile to the base brew, with a malt that tastes a little thin, but ultimately supports the flavors very well. More bourbon forward than I remember and this reduces the impact of the vanilla and chocolate. Nevertheless, the overall flavor is rich and satisfying. Nice dark fruit from the malt or bourbon melds well with the chocolate. Really nice, lingering chocolatey bourbon finish. Excellent barreled stout.
