Happy Late Night Abbreviated New Beer Sunday (Week 708)! I am not much for buying bottled beers at this point, especially not when I am nearing the end of the eradication of The Bottle Backlog here at Chez Woody. That said, I found myself intrigued by this one when it recently arrived at The Friendly Greek Bottle Shop. The label is like a cross between the Church of the Subgenius, Bettie Page, Lil Abner & Popeye! A cute, tanned blonde with bangs smoking a pipe while hefting a beer glass in her L hand and an oversized lemon on her R shoulder with massively muscled arms smiles out at us.
From the Bottle: "That's not Shandy - That's not Radler - That's a real beer with juice!"; "Beer from the Staropolski Brewery, brewed in the traditional method of opened fermentation, with the addition of juice."
I gave it some in-bottle agitation & then Pop!ped the cap to begin a C-Line pour. I got just under two fingers of dense, fizzy, foamy, light-tan head with good retention that left behind some nice lacing. Color was a deeply-hazy/lightly-cloudy Amber (SRM = > 7, < 9). Nose had a light, lemony citrusy tartness, but I found myself wishing that t were more pronounced. After all, the young lady is hefting a massive lemon! Mouthfeel was medium. No need to worry about whether they had added enough lemon juice! The taste was full-on lemon, only slightly sweetened by virtue of the base Lager. Otherwise, it was like a shot of ReaLemon from the plastic squeeze bottle! I did that once, as a small child in a pique of curiosity & the taste remains with me to this day. With this style, the emphasis is & must be on the fruit. It certainly was on the label & the taste was no slouch, either. There was no question that it was of Lemon & I especially liked that it tasted like Lemon juice & not artificially flavored Lemonade mix as some such beers that I have reviewed have been. Finish was dry & tart, but not overly puckering. It was highly refreshing & it seems as though they make a series of fruited beers, so I am going to be looking for them if they appear on our shores. This makes for a great Summertime beer.
