Platformer is almost clear, pale straw (SRM 3-4). One inch of fine white head slowly compresses to leave patches of delicate lace on a Pretentious Glass Company Dimpled Mug.
The aroma is initially very pleasant, with light orchard fruit of apples and cherries. Mild floral notes follow in a subtle and collaborative way. Later, mild mineral and abrasive aromas begin to detract. While these are noticeable, they can be dismissed.
The flavor opens with a sharp and abrasive bitterness. It has all the harshness and little of the joy that hops can bring. There is a lot of grain, no fruit and no pine. Minerals have a strong presence. The finish starts immediately with the first sip and never fades. This finish is harsh and off-putting.
It has a crisp, medium body and a coarse nylon texture. Alcohol is more noticeable than it should be, and the carbonation is modest to fizzy. The mineral and metallic notes just keep pounding away, elevating a harsh dryness.
As a beer in general, Platformer is okay. However, the Kolsch style is hard-pressed to fit here.
