an interesting take on the style here, my first beer from these guys after hearing some good things. it didnt wow me, but i like that its distinctive. orangish amber in color with just a short off white head from the tap, a little lazy looking, but the color is right and i can see lots of bubbles in it, even they dont collect into a long lasting head that i like to see cap a classic oktoberfest. the nose here is sweet to me, less nutty and more caramelized than many, without a ton of depth. i get a light maple hint, a baked layer, and then the german lager yeast, which doesnt seem to have chewed all the way through this one yet, like its slightly incomplete. the flavor agrees, and while i can taste the yeast just fine, its work seems undone. this has a lot of residual sugar, and as such less drinkability than i generally look for in the style, but the finish is unique. i get a light spice note, swear its cinnamon, but maybe an earthy smoky clove thing too, right on the swallow, intentional or not it makes these even more fall-like and its a cool twist however it is achieved. medium body, decent carbonation, but no real finish on it due to the sweetness. some refinement is needed, but i like that this isnt just another one of the same. hoping to get a chance to check out the brewery next time i am out this way...
