one of the more unique beers ive ever had, so much so im not even sure what to classify it as, carrots arent fruit so not a fruited kettle sour, im not sure its rightly a wild beer, although i do get more than just lactic pucker in the ferment here, its just not neatly anything, but thats kind of awesome, fruit and field beer seemed most appropriate perhaps for this. what a cool beer! apparently named for an album or a band or something musical i dont know, which may add a cool factor, but its righteous just as beer too. incredibly pretty color, full saturation almost crayon purple to reddish, beet juice color, slightly electric, a little thick and sedimented, and without any head, but a color that can really only come from the purple carrots this is brewed with, wow, just striking in the glass, even if near still. the nose is amazing, root vegetable galore, right from the ground, dark wet rich soil and all, and amazingly its almost specifically purple not orange carrots, just wild, full of minerals too, terroir, and even the green tops to me, aromatic like that. its also exceedingly sour, red wine vinegar, a hint of raspberry tang too, mostly bacterial but a light almost saison ester to me, a hint of pear, and some light funk, although i wouldnt say this is bretty in any real way. the flavor is so carrot forward its amazing, wonder how they added them, perhaps juiced and did a secondary ferment? is there much sugar in carrots? its just so pure tasting to the vegetable, i want to know more. i wish this wasnt so sour, some of their beers have been like this, others a little more toned down and funky, which i wish for instead. its too sour to drink much of, there is a ton of acid, acetic even, and its dead still unfortunately, so the texture doesnt really fit the flavor, which is epic, i want more of this but i kind of cant. sick use of the carrots though, and lovely packaging on yet another entirely unique and original beer from atypical. if these guys were anywhere but the dakotas they would be hyped up like crazy, they deserve more attention for this kind of stuff!
