3/14/2020 on draft at Riverlands during bottle release. rating 4.5
5/31/2020 bottle reviewed.
Appearance: The stout body is black as night body. One and a half fingers of medium brown head. Head recedes down to a a ring around the glass.
Smell: Chocolate with a nice waft of oak barrel & top shelf bourbon.
Taste: Impression from the first sip is rich sweetness from top shelf bourbon and a layered chocolatey base stout. Milk & dark chocolate flavors are layered in the base stout. Barrel notes include: Dry oak. Moderate char & smoke. Caramel & vanilla. Tobacco. So smooth and complex its fantastic.
Mouthfeel: full bodied stout. Low and adequate carbonation. Thick body. Smooth barrel aged stout.
Overall: I enjoyed the bottle more than the draft pour. Draft pour was boozy and the bottle is loaded with big smooth barrel noted without any boozy harshness. These Weller barrels are impressive. Smooth premium bourbon flavors that are very complex and layered. Riverlands really brewed and barrel aged a stellar stout. My only complaint is format; I would prefer two 4 packs of cans over two bottle limit of bombers. Cans are always the best way to package beer even barrel aged beers.
