Gokstad, our Norwegian Farmhouse Ale collaboration with friends Art History Brewing in Geneva, takes us a few leaps back in the history of beer with its traditional grain bill, brewing methods, and ingredients.
Barley, oats, wheat, and rye fill out the grain bill, and real juniper sprigs in the mash lend an herbal, earthy essence. This is a raw beer, meaning there was no boil, only bringing the temperature up high enough to pasteurize the liquid. Kviek yeast from the Hornindal region of Norway adds a touch of fruitiness to counterbalance the earth tones.
The final result is a murky, earthy, yet strangely refreshing brew that just feels right in a big ol' mug. Who knew the Vikings were the original haze bros?!

Cloudy - looks like apple cider - with a thing off-white head. Aroma is yeasty, woody, earthy, wet leaves, and hints of apple cider. Taste follows suit with notes of woody malts, earthy hops, and hints of apple cider. The profile is yeast driven. Feel is fuller bodied. Sprightly carbonation. Interesting beer, worth a try if it’s a style you enjoy.

Had on tap. Murky opaque pale orange with a white collar, not the most appetizing beer. Smells has big earth, kviek yeast robust breadiness, rye, wheat, dulled berries and oddly enough, peanuts. Taste follows this trend, including the peanuts, more fruity with the berries and hints of clementine, yeast runs this beer despite the gentle complexities. Feel is robust yet light, though sneaky thick and very yeasty. Not a looker but a good brew. The wife liked it
