22oz bottle poured into side project Durobar Charente glass.
Appearance: black bodied stout with a thick cap of medium brown head. Head drops down to Thick ring around the outside of the glass.
Smell: Barrel forward stout. The Wild Turkey barrels are spicy, oaky, and smooth, but not spicy like a rye spice. Great aromas of barrel / spirit character. Chocolate and a light vanilla. Not smelling much for strawberries.
Taste: Man... the Wild Turkey barrels are very very bold in this stout. Spicy & rich bourbon with very heavy barrel char and smoke. Lots of leather and pipe tobacco. Hint of milk chocolate, but the more dominate chocolate flavor is an intense bakers cocoa. Hint of vanilla and hint of caramel and coconut. Long lingering lightly bitter cocoa and pipe tobacco finish. This stout really has to warm up for the strawberries to show themselves. The strawberry flavor finally arrives as the stout warms pretty close to room temperature; it lands before the aftertaste and taste slightly juicy berry yet slightly watery strawberry flavor as well. As the strawberry emerges, the bakers cocoa transitions into more of a smooth dark chocolate flavor.
Mouthfeel: medium bodied stout; low and adequate carbonation levels. This stout is one of the thinner bodied barrel aged stouts from Riverlands. It has a watery texture in the body as well. The stout isn't necessarily a boozy barrel aged stout, but it isn't nearly as balanced as the majority of the Riverlands barrel program stouts usually are.
Overall: Didn't try the base stout when it saw it's original release. So not sure what level of the strawberry had in this base beer before it saw the barrel time. That is one thing that I would have liked to know about the base stout of this beer. I really enjoy the Wild Turkey barrel notes though they are fairly intense. The body of this stout is a little lacking and the overall of this beer is it's a little rough around the edges, but I think that 8 to 12 month's time in the bottle will smooth out the edges I would think.
