Imperial Vanilla Stout Aged in Buffalo Trace & Whiskey Acres Rye Whiskey Barrels
Grimoire’s story is similar to that of Tranquil. But where Tranquil sought peace and balance, Grimoire reached deep into the murky depths to see what beer sorcery was possible. It took some of the Tranquil Barrel, but also some Buffalo Trace Barrels, and presumably an eye of newt, or not. These were carefully combined, candles were lit, mystical words were said, the lights were darkened, and a metric crap ton of actual vanilla beans from all over the world was added. Yeah. Magic isn’t real. There’s no demonic power here, the trick to this spell is LOTS and LOTS of vanilla. Too Much, some might say later when writing distro emails desperate for solid themes. But not when drinking it. Then it’s just right.

22 ounce bottle into a snifter. Had 2/4/23.
Pours near black and opaque with a quick flash of a head and no lacing. Aromas of rye whiskey, roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate, light oak and char, light leather. Has a spicy aroma. Flavors of rye whiskey, chocolate, vanilla, light roast malt, light oak and char. Has a spicy taste. Smooth, lightly creamy, a solid full body, appropriately carbonated.
This is pretty straightforward, but the aromas and flavors are distinct and intense. Wouldn’t say it’s a vanilla bomb, but there’s plenty of it. Really enjoyable.

Had on tap. I loved tranquil so I am very excited to try this variant with vanilla and rye as a focus. Brownish hints in the lush black body with a brown ring. Smell has that new emphasis of vanilla and rye but never loses the base molasses, baker's chocolate, dark fruit oak and somewhat smoky earth. Where the original reminded me of bcbs, this does not as much the VR bcbs, as the vanilla is not a potent though omnipresent, but given more recent batches that is a good thing. The rye booze is very warm, cutting and melding in with everything from the nose. Feel is very warm, heavy, full, has great textures from barrel and maltwork, smooth and finishes dry. Like trnaquil a bit more but this is well worth your time as well
