a pretty nice beer here, maybe a little lower in alcohol and thinner than some of the best examples of the style, but i dont mind a classically fashioned dark lager like this that i can have a few of. quite a lot of flavor in this, and somewhat more unique than the other beers we had here. its got a ton of dried fruit character from raisin to date to cherry, and there is a little tang in the yeast that almost gives it a tart cranberry note or something. the color is reddish brown and the head is short but persistent. it smells sweet and obviously german to me, although some of the grain almoat gives a belgian dark strong or dubbel richness to the beer, an abbey type. i get nuances of port wine, red apples, and toffee sweetness coming though. the lager yeast is familiar and pretty well done, although this isnt quite as hearty as some, or as flavorful on the fermentation side. the malt profile is excellent though, the proportions are right, and there is a cool smoothness to it. a little bit of astringency on the finish is odd, but i still dig it, and on the whole this is a nice fall brew to sip on out back in their awesome patio area! distinctive for the style.
