this stout is done with the coffee from right across the parking lot there, which was phenomenal when we visited the next morning, really world class quality, and it really also showed in this stout, which is pretty simple, minimal, and straightforward, meaning the coffee really makes and defines it. probably also objectively the best beer we had in here at matchwood, although they were all pretty solid. this is deep and black, shiny and frothy headed, pretty beer as it drinks too. the coffee has a lot of character, which is easily appreciable because the malt is most dark roasted barley to me, little else in the middle of it. i get subtle toffee and nutty notes, dark bitter baking chocolate, and a real warming richness from the java, and it works into the base stout super well, which feels lavish and smooth to me, likely some oats in play as well creating this texture. some coffee bitterness with the roasted grain at the end, but its very dry and finishes pretty quick for what it is. i like the lower abv of this, means you can have a bunch of them, and the beer is interesting and smooth enough that i want to. really nice use of the local coffee, and an excellent stout overall. sometimes less is more, and thats the case here. really well crafted!
