Poured a deep deep amber hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and lacing.
The smell featured a clean sweet malt, toasted grain and a bit of rye spice.
The taste consisted of spicy rye malt, burnt caramel and a bit of charcoal. Balancing herbal hop noted as well.
The mouthfeel was typical of the style.
Overall a rather complex ale. Nice grain bill.

(From notes)
A - Deep rich coppery brown color; with a thinner white head; not much lacing or retention
S - Woody; bit of rum and alcohol and vanilla; touch sweet, and back to a hint of booze
T - Boozy right up front; definitive rum notes; drying rye comes in and tempers some of the sweetness; earthy and minerals; woody; dark fruit finishes it out
M - Medium and a little viscous; soft carbonation
D - Kinda difficult after a bit; pretty rich brew with quite a few things going on; the booze slowed me down in terms of the aroma and flavor
Overall, tasty and warming, and found some nice interesting things in this brew. Certainly worth a look.

RBSG09 on tap at the brewery. Dark brownish amber color with a thick lacy ecru head. Aroma is milk chocolate and rye bread crusts. Flavor is creamy brown malts and chocolate with a light rye spiciness. Excellent balance, just enough sweetness. Seems to get better as it breathes a bit. Huge drinkability for the 8% abv.

Reviewed on 06/21/09. On draft. Pours brown with a small head. Aroma of roasted malt and iced tea. Flavor of sweet malt with some hops in the finish, maybe some rye but only because I was looking for it. I though that this was a decent beer, but it was nothing special.
