a solid coffee porter here, done with locally roasted coffee from just up the street. the base beer is exceedingly simple, roasty but mild, with some light chocolate notes and just a hint of licorice or something to it, dark barley abounds, but its mellow. the coffee stands out a lot in here, a dark roast to it, some bitterness through most of it, good espresso crema sort of oily richness to this, and its not as sweet as a lot of them are, the coffee keeps this very balanced to me. its a little stronger in the nose than the taste, but very well integrated overall, and this is a smooth and nice drinking porter, better than the rye pale ale, which is the other brew i had time for in here. this is very well refined, and has me keen to try the rising trout coffee when i am back through here next. i liked this place, they seem to be figuring things out a little bit still, but its great that it seems like every small town in montana has a brewery now, and this one is nicer than most. a nice midday pick me up beer here!
